    • Blade MP3 Encoder (Freeware)
Blade MP3 Encoder allows you to easily make your own Mp3s.

    • MP3 Enc v3.1
MP3 Enc v3.1 MP3Enc is Fraunhofer's often-imitated command-line MP3 encoder. It lets you take standard .wav files and shrink them to a fraction of their former size but still maintain nearly all of the original's quality by removing unnecessary audio information. It's still one of the best-sounding MP3 encoders around, but being a command-line utility, isn't very user-friendly. However, there are several Windows-based MP3 encoder front-ends in our library that can make its use easier. This demo version lets you create .mp3-compatible files up to 30 seconds in length.

    • FastMp3 Download from Ware.netfirms
      FastMp3 Download from ZDNet (Freeware)
FastMp3 FastMp3 is a simple but speedy Wave-to-MPEG encoder that now allows you to perform MPEG-to-Wave conversions as well. With a compact, button-driven interface that is simplicity itself, FastMp3 lets you load your .wav (or .mp3) file, encode it, and save it to any specified destination by merely clicking three different buttons. You can set the bit rate at either 112000 or 128000 and set the encoding speed at either 44KHz (slower) or 22KHz (faster). A convenient Options button lets you configure the program to hide after encoding and to automatically play the MP3 when the conversion process is complete. A progress bar will keep you informed as to how the conversion process is going, and a Help button provides quick access to well-organized program documentation. Although you need to manually supply a name for the converted file (the preconversion filename doesn't carry over), this freeware converter's speed, efficiency, and ease of use make it a worthwhile download.

  •   MIDI
    • IBM Music Site
    • IBM Music Sketcher
Demonstrates some of the technology being developed at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center. MusicSketcher is a vehicle for experimenting, generating ideas, and exploring the power of the new music technology developed at the Computer Music Center. The features included in MusicSketcher illustrate the work begin done on blocks, modifiers, and SmartHarmony within the Computer Music group.

A block is a container that holds musical data. Currently, the program supports two types of blocks: riff blocks that contain MIDI data and harmony blocks that contain chord progressions.

A modifier is a real-time transformation algorithm that, when applied to a block, alters some aspect of the sound produced by that block.

SmartHarmony has a model of tonal music that tries to keep the musical elements contained in a project internally consistent. SmartHarmony constrains pitch transformations within a chosen harmonic framework.

Music Sketcher allows you to compose music by dragging riff blocks and positioning them on a graphical metaphor for a ScorePart within a ScoreSheet. The music can be shaped by applying modifiers - graphical curves that alter various aspects of the music - to produce a wide range of musically expressive transformations on the pitch, articulation, and loudness of the music. SmartHarmony is a model of tonal music that constrains these riffs within the context of a selected chord progression. The purpose of this release of Music Sketcher is to demonstrate how modifiers and SmartHarmony combine to give a surprising amount of creative power and expressive ability, even when you are limited to the pre-existing riffs. Music Sketcher is currently a thin graphical wrapper around some unique ideas, and is not a complete compositional tool. Music Sketcher should (and probably will) have a number of additional features and improvements. (Please e-mail us your suggestions at msketch@watson.ibm.com.)

  •   Recording and Mixing
    • Cool Edit
Cool Edit 96 is a digital audio editor for Windows 95 and Windows NT. You can use it to record and play files in a wide variety of audio formats, edit files and mix them together, and convert files from one format to another.

But Cool Edit is much more than just an editor, recorder, and player: it's like a complete recording studio inside your computer. You can work on multiple files simultaneously with the New Instance feature. You can create sounds from scratch with Generate Tones, Generate Noise, and Generate DTMF Signals. You can "touch up" your audio with features like FFT Filter, Quick Filter, Amplify, Compress, Envelope, Stretch, Channel Mixer, and Noise Reduction. You can add fantastic effects to files like Reverb, Delay, Echo, 3D Echo Chamber, Flanging, and Distortion. You can even adjust the pitch or tempo of your audio with the Stretch function. When you find just the effect you want, you can save it as a Preset for later recall, and you can use Cool Edit's Scripts and Batch Processing features to automate your work.

Cool Edit also offers powerful data analysis features. The Spectral View gives you a multi-color map of the sounds in your files. You can generate a Frequency Analysis to see which frequencies predominate at a point or in a region of your waveform. The Statistics feature gives you information on peak amplitude, minimum and maximum RMS power levels, and more.

Cool Edit offers two truly unique features. Want to hear your dog sing opera? You can do it with the Making Music feature. You can also create Brainwave files to induce states of deep sleep, theta meditation, or alpha relaxation.

Sounds complicated? Don't worry; Cool Edit is also easy to use. If you make a mistake, the multi-level Undo feature can back you out. You can quickly learn how to navigate the main screen, and Cool Edit offers a variety of keyboard and mouse shortcuts and an editable toolbar. The Cue and Play lists make it easy to find, name, and play segments within a file, and the built-in CD player controls give you easy access to your computer's CD player. If you get into trouble or can't figure out how to do something, just look at the Troubleshooting or Common Procedures Help topics, or send an email to support@syntrillium.com.

Above all, Cool Edit is fun! Once you've played with it for a while, you'll see how it got its name.

    • Gold Wave
GoldWave&trade is a comprehensive digital audio editor that allows you to play, record, edit, and convert audio on your computer.

      Features:

An Expression Evaluator allows you to generate everything from simple dial tones to bandpass filters. It supports more than 20 common functions and operations. Expressions can be stored in groups for quick retrieval. Expressions for dial tones, waves, and effects are included.

An independent Device Controls window provides easy access to audio devices. It contains controls for playback, rewind / fast forward, recording, volume, and speed. LED meters and oscilloscopes graphically display the sound during playback and recording. The oscilloscopes can be configured to display graphs in several different formats.

A multiple document interface (MDI) allows many files to be opened at one time, making file-to-file editing easy.

All editing operations, such as paste and mix, are intelligent. This means that clipboard audio data is automatically converted to a compatible format before the data is used. When editing files with different sampling rates, bit resolution, or number of channels, intelligent editing simplifies the process.

Huge files can be edited using hard disk editing. Small files can be edited quickly using RAM based editing.

Sounds are displayed graphically and the level of detail can be changed by zooming in or out. Samples can be edited directly with the mouse when zoomed in to a sub-sample level (the level at which individual samples are easily visible).

Many audio effects, such as Reverse, Echo, Pan, Flange, and Distortion allow you to enhance, distort, or alter sounds in various ways.

Save as can convert sounds to many different file types. It can convert stereo to mono, 8 to 16 bits, or any combination of attributes supported by a file type.

A sophisticated and intuitive user interface makes learning easy. Control bar buttons perform commands with a single click of the mouse. Configurable status bars present information in a variety of formats.

    • N - Track
This program will turn your computer in to a powerful multitrack recorder: All you need is a full duplex soundcard, Windows 95, 98 or NT, a microphone and some free space on your hard drive. There are no limitations on what you can realize with this program: the most powerful feature is that the tracks (wave files) aren't mixed together in a single wave file and then played. The mixing process is done "on the fly": in this way you can alter the volume and pan settings while listening to your song or even while recording.

You can also add effects to tracks non-destructively (again the result of the effect processing isn’t written on a file but is calculated “on-the-fly” during playback) and change their parameters hearing the results in real-time. The program comes with 4 native effects (chorus, echo, compression and auto-volume) but can also use third party DirectX audio plug-ins (some are optionally installed by the setup program, among which FASoft 4-Band ParEQ).
